General Operating Support
Without strong operating support, BJ simply would not exist. This Funding supports our ongoing efforts – day to day — to fulfill our mission. Anytime you celebrate Shabbat with us or attend a class, volunteer or enjoy BJ musicians, you are participating in the day to day life of our community funded by general operating support.
Kol Nidre Annual Partnership Appeal
The Kol Nidre Annual Partnership Appeal is a critical part of funding for BJ and provides more than 30% of our annual operating budget. We hope you will continue to make BJ a philanthropic priority by making an annual contribution to this appeal.
89th Street Building Fund
In 2010, BJ launched a capital campaign to purchase its former Community House from the Abraham Joshua Heschel School. We successfully raised $22 million and hired a firm to develop a space and program plan. We will pleased to keep our members up-to-date about next steps and our plans to make the building reflect our values, programs, and the spirit of BJ.
BJ/SPSA Homeless Shelter Fund
Contributions support the homeless shelter and make it possible to continue to provide hot meals, overnight accommodations and a light breakfast five days a week.
Judith Bernstein Lunch Program Fund
Contributions provide lunch to those in need. Every Thursday, our dedicated volunteers serve a hot meal and distribute brown bag lunches, helping hundreds of hungry adults and children each month.
Giving Tuesday Fund
Established in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, Giving Tuesday takes place the week following Thanksgiving and Black Friday as a way of uniting the nation through charitable giving. Your contribution to BJ’s Giving Tuesday campaign will support an important cause in our community that has been pre-selected by the BJ staff based on the specific year’s need.
It is a Jewish custom to make a donation on the anniversary of the death of our loved ones. Contributions support the BJ’s general operating fund.
88th Street memorial plaques are also available as a permanent tribute to a loved one for a donation of $1,800. Click here for more information.
Contributions help support an array of our limud (education) activities, including our introductory series on Judaism, more advanced classes on spiritualism and other topics, as well as one-time learning experiences with distinguished teachers.
The Arthur P. Morgan Fund
The Arthur P. Morgan Fund was generously started to help support students and their families with special learning needs as they prepare for their bar or bat mitzvah. This Fund provides scholarships to students as they work individually with a tutor to prepare to become bar or bat mitzvah at B’nai Jeshurun. BJ works with a cadre of tutors who are qualified to teach children with special needs, or families may choose to find their own tutor, such as a beloved school teacher who might be Jewish, in communication with BJ.
ASL Interpreting Fund
Contributions are needed to periodically provide ASL interpreted Shabbat and holiday services for Jews who are Deaf.
Beba Bronstein Jewish Camp Scholarship Fund
Contributions give a child the opportunity to attend camp.
Bikkur Holim is the mitzvah of visiting the sick. In the event of illness, BJ volunteers offer support through the Bikkur Holim Committee.
Contributions help provide support for our weekly Shabbat morning Children’s Services for families with children ages 6 and younger. This dynamic service filled the kavannah (intention) for Shabbat and includes singing, dancing, and storytelling.
Community Engagement Fund
Etz Hayim Fund
Contributions support the upkeep and replacement our Torah commentary books, Etz Hayim. A donation of $72 or more includes a dedicated bookplate to place in the book.
Contributions are needed to enable BJ to adopt the increased costs of adopting environmentally sustainable practices in our synagogue, helping to reduce our community’s carbon footprint.
Contributions help provide a vibrant and compelling Jewish educational experience and enable our classrooms and initiatives to grow.
Helen Radin Memorial Zayin Adar Teaching
Contributions support the annual Zayin Adar Teaching. Helen Radin, beloved BJ member and former BJ staff member, provided a loving and supportive foundation for so many in our community in her role as Director of the Rabbinic Office, staff member of Hevra Kadisha for over 11 years, and as a committed volunteer. To honor Helen’s life we have named the Zayin Adar Annual Teaching in her memory.
Contributions support the Committee that performs tahara (preparation of the body for burial), provides siddurim and leaders for shiva minyanim and comfort to those who are in mourning.
Contributions are needed to help cover the costs of holding our community kiddushim on the weeks when we don’t have sponsorship.
Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Memorial Fund
Established in memory of Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer, z”l spiritual leader of BJ from 1985 to 1993. Contributions support projects outside the BJ community that honor his lifelong pursuit of tikkun olam.
Miriam L. Siroky Fund for Family Education
Contributions support projects such as the Reimagine education initiative, the BJ Family Siddur and the CD, HaLaila Hazeh: The Music of Pesah at BJ.
Morning Minyan Fund
Operating Endowment Fund
Contributions ensure BJ’s future vitality.
Rabbis’ and Hazzan’s Discretionary Funds
Contributions allow the rabbis and hazzan to make donations to special projects within the BJ congregation and the broader community.
Shira Palmer-Sherman Memorial Fund
Contributions bring prominent scholars to BJ to speak about egalitarianism and pluralism in the Jewish world.
Social Action Fund-Tzedek v’Shalom
Contributions support programs reflecting BJ’s commitment to social change. A commitment to justice and peace is a defining characteristic of B’nai Jeshurun and is rooted in the prophetic vision of Judaism. This includes B’nai Jeshurun’s Community Organizing and Advocacy Initiative and our Social Justice Steering Committee that brings together our direct-service programs, community organizing and advocacy work, one-time events and responses to crises.
Teen Programming and Scholarships
Contributions support our growing teen program which is designed to empower teens through education, advocacy, direct service and immersion experiences, giving them the necessary tools to engage in the larger world. Contributions also assist those in need who could not otherwise afford to participate in programming and teen trips.
